As part of our ongoing commitment to deliver new Sea of Thieves content throughout the year and beyond, Forsaken Shores offers our biggest update yet at no charge for those who own the game or access it through Xbox Game Pass. There has never been a better time to set sail and adventure with other pirates in the Sea of Thieves community. Today, Forsaken Shores invites players to venture into a new volcanic region called The Devil’s Roar. This perilous and challenging area of the Sea of Thieves will have players encountering volcano eruptions raining down hot rocks and flowing lava, terrifying earthquakes, unpredictable geysers that can fling players into the air and dangerous super-heated water around islands. Also new to Forsaken Shores is the Row Boat, which will be key to assisting the navigation of this dangerous new region, but also enriching all journeys across every area of the world. Players can also take on new Devil’s Roar Voyages, with increased challenge that allows players to reap greater rewards. Just Cause 4 Will Come Out This Winter A GamesCom 2018 presentation for Just Cause 4 was made public on Thursday and it showed nearly 20 minutes of gameplay. You can view the video below! “It’s a game [that’s] built on a conundrum of systems that work at the same time,” explained the game’s director, Francesco Antolini. “So very often the unexpected happens.” The gameplay video showed some of Just Cause 4’s vehicles, its grappling hook, and two of the four different biomes of the game’s world, Solis. The video also showcased the customization system for the grappling hook. The attachments of the hook can be given different mods and, according to Antolini, there are “more than 4 million combinations” for mod loadouts. “This means that, however you’re playing, if you compare your loadout to the loadout of a friend after some hours that you’re playing, you’re probably going to find that they are different, that they have discovered something that you haven’t or that she does something different than what you do and so on,” Antolini explained. “It’s really a tool that has endless possibilities in creative terms.” What did you think of the gameplay video? I n August, during a GamesCom livestream, Capcom gave us a look at their upcoming entry into the Devil May Cry series with a release date trailer that showed off Nero squaring off against some insanely impressive big baddies, making use of the series’ focus on style during combat and some impressive camera work, brilliant animations and frequent slow motion to really set the stage. This time Capcom have put the focus back on Dante, kicking off with him at Nero’s demon hunting agency before being called to the “office”, that being leaping around disposing of horrific beasts of the underworld. As with the GamesCom trailer, the star of the show is the style. Everything is over the top and dripping with awesome as Dante leaps around in slow motion wielding an array of weapons that lead to phenomenal animations as he takes on the brilliantly designed foes. The trailer also brings in Lady, a demon hunter from DMC 3 and 4 along with Trish, a demon hunter from DMC 2 and 4 . They seem to be computer controlled characters who fight alongside Dante (triggering many a one liner) and are sure to be unlockable characters in the full game. We also get to see more of Nico, the cybernetics expert in charge of bringing us the most delicious weapons that can be built. Review: Ray-tracing, plenty of performance and bright future for gaming Back at a dedicated event during GamesCom 2018 in Cologne, Germany, Nvidia officially unveiled the new Geforce RTX series and the Turing GPU, but only gave a glimpse of what is coming and what it will mean for future gaming, and that future is bright in our book. In case you missed it back then when Jensen Huang took the stage, the Nvidia RTX series is based on a brand new Turing architecture, which, in Nvidia words, “reinvents graphics”, by including some new parts of the GPU, like the RT and Tensor Cores, new AI features, advanced shading, and pushing game development in a new direction and future, one that is not only exciting for gamers but even seem to be pulling a lot of game developers to its side. After a short demo that launched during GamesCom, Ubisoft’s unorthodox thriller Transference is now available. As a collaboration with SpectreVision (co-founded by actor Elijah Wood), Transference sees players attempting to piece digital memories together. It’s not as straightforward as it sounds though. Check out the launch trailer below. The game focuses on a disturbed scientist’s experiment – a simulation of his memories involving his family. Players will between different perspectives and learn more about what happened to the family as well as what the scientist did to make things this way. Combined with the aesthetic, Transference can be very surreal when it’s not trying to outright scare you. Despite launching for PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, Transference is still playable on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Considering some of the talent working on the experience and just how out-of-the-box this kind of concept is for Ubisoft Montreal, we’re looking forward to its reception. During GamesCom, I was able to have a hands-on with Ace Combat 7. You can read my full thoughts in my preview of the game , but simply put, I’m looking forward to it. The return to Strangereal and the storytelling that has always kept me enamoured with core Ace Combat titles. As well as this, the enhanced visuals, the inclusion of VR support and new features only make the game look better. After my hands-on with the game, I was able to talk to producer Kazutoki Kono about the game and the route it’s taking. Here’s what we talked about. Chris Wray : I understand Ace Combat 7 is making a return to Strangereal. When exactly will it be set in relation to the other Ace Combat games? Kazutoki Kono: It’s set ten years after Ace Combat 5 as a story. So the story is based on the history of what happened then and other previous stories. Chris: So in Assault Horizon you allowed for the use of other vehicles. Will this also allow for that, if not, have you increased the number of planes you can use? Kazutoki: As a numbered title we have focused only on fighter jets. Also, because we have designed every aircraft from scratch again, we couldn’t expand on the variety of the aircraft. Gamers are still reeling after watching the stunning 48-minute long Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay demo shortly after GamesCom last month. The hype for the game managed to get to new heights, and it was already strong to begin with. It’s hardly a surprise, then, that EDGE magazine chose to feature Cyberpunk 2077 on their November 2018 magazine cover. In the article, CD Projekt RED’s Producer Richard Borzymowski explained that the success enjoyed by The Witcher 3 – far greater than the previous two installments – breathed additional confidence into the development team as they moved on to the new challenge of Cyberpunk 2077. It gave us a sense of safety in our own skills. Right now our environment artists are populating a level with the assets, and they are not afraid of testing out new things. This is exactly what we need to stay open to, because personally I believe that The Witcher turned out that good – and why Cyberpunk will turn out really good – because we are not afraid of change. It takes a degree of determination, for sure. Warhammer: Chaosbane, announced last month just before GamesCom 2018, has been recently showcased with the first gameplay video (which also features developer commentary). Developed by Eko Software, the French studio behind the two How to Survive titles among other games, it will be published by Bigben Interactive next year on PC and consoles. This adaptation of the franchise will be the first Action-RPG to take place in the Warhammer Fantasy world . The game takes place in the Old World, a dark and bloody continent devastated by wars against Chaos. In Warhammer: Chaosbane , the player will be plunged into the middle of Old World history as they embody a human, a high elf, a wood elf, or a dwarf and discover several iconic locations such as the cursed city of Praag, or Nuln, the old capital of the Empire. Before speaking to some of the key members of the Shadow of the Tomb Raider development team at GamesCom, I was given the opportunity to play one of their newly designed deadly tombs. In front of the development team. The tomb was centred around what I rather unaffectionately called the “spinning blade death thingy”, a huge totem with a number of blade arms sticking out at various angles. Players had to avoid its arms, then sprint deadly obstacle courses around the edges of the totem to eventually shut it off. It took me quite a while but did give me the chance to explore just a glimpse of the highly anticipated game before it launches on September 14th for PC , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . Shadow of the Tomb Raider looks to be every bit as big and exciting as the previous games in the reboot trilogy, with a new location and culture to explore in a larger hub. This isn’t the first time I’ve previewed Metro Exodus, my first hands-on with the game was in June, just prior to its showing at E3. You would think that I wouldn’t have jumped at the chance to check the game out again at GamesCom, but the second I found out it was brand new gameplay, It was a done deal. I already knew I liked Metro Exodus from that first time, though I was eager to find out and see more. My second time around certainly didn’t disappoint, if only because it started to show more about what we’re likely to encounter in the game. What we do encounter, or at least feel, is a general sense of unease. A feeling that will put you on the edge of your seat. This isn’t something that immediately happens at the start of the level I found myself in. At the very start of this level, I was feeling pissed off. Not at the game, god no. The game was successful. The backstory is simple, I need to rescue somebody who’s been taken by some of the natives of this lush forest area. It gets complicated when you realise that there’s another faction. Its this other faction that irritated me. They call themselves the pirates. They refused to tell me anything, they were rude and they were happy to leave me stranded, alone, and threatened to kill me should I risk entering their territory. As we begin to wrap up our last few thoughts on convention season it’s almost criminal that we haven’t talked about Remedy’s Control yet. The game which wowed audiences and press alike at E3 found itself squirreled away in a tiny booth backstage both when we visited it at GamesCom 2018. However, if I learned anything from our time with Control it’s that even an inconspicuous little space can hold mind-blowing revelations. When Remedy Entertainment sat us down to show us a little of Control, I did not know what to expect. The team’s previous outing with Quantum Break was a masterful piece of storytelling that ended up feeling a little flat. By the time we finished our with Jesse Faden, the main protagonist, it became clear that Control is not likely to suffer from the same passive problems. Control follows Jesse as she takes on the role of Director of the Federal Bureau of Control. This mysterious organization is wrapped up in all sorts of supernatural oddities that seem to have overrun the Oldest House, their primary base of operations. This is where Remedy dropped us into the thick of things. Taking control of Jesse, players entering the Oldest House will find that Control provides much more player agency than previous titles such as Quantum Break and even Alan Wake. One of the properties to be revealed at GamesCom this year that drew the attention of the entire VRFocus team was Nostos . Created by NetEase Games, the colourful, dream-like artwork and Legend of Zelda -like gameplay was enough to catch the interest of many. Nina Salamons takes a closer look at what makes Nostos tick. Nostos has been described as an open world, multiplayer virtual reality (VR) environment. The lush environments have been inspired by the works of famed animation studio, Studio Ghibli, with its beauty defying the post-apocalyptic setting of the story. NetEase Games turned to the SpatialOS simulation technology created by UK-based company Improbable which allows a seamless open world to be created, which will contain a host of amazing locations, things to be scavenged, or built along with specially simulated weather patterns, which can prove to be as much of an obstacle as the enemies you have to fight. While the world of Nostos is beautiful, much of it has been left desolate and empty, with the few scattered survivors struggling to survive. Those who are left face the encroachment of the dangerous and continuously expanding ‘Coralsea’ which threatens to encompass the land and drive the remaining survivors to extinction. There were a lot of games at GamesCom. A lot of them were good and interesting, but I didn’t get enough time with them to write you thousands of words, or they’re not quite done enough yet. They’re a soufflé that needs more time to rise. But I still wanted to tell you about them, these strange little soufflés in many different flavours. An alternate universe horror game starring Nikola Tesla. A game where you manage orphans. The most ambitious MMO that may never get made. A noir story set against the backdrop of all of creation. We are but a day away from our Post GamesCom XR Review, which is taking place in London this Thursday at The Realities Centre’s venue at Huckletree West. The review is, among all things, a chance for people to get together, try some virtual reality (VR) and discuss with those working with VR what they are doing and VR’s videogaming path coming out of GamesCom and all that happened there. You can sign up here incidentally and get a ticket. Of course you’re like as not aware of things already mentioned on the site which will be in attendence, but as with all events some things change so we have some changes to the card (as it were) to inform you of. The bad news is that Firesprite and their VR videogame The Persistence will no longer be able to attend which is a great shame. Don’t worry though as we’ve some new items to announce as well! First up is confirmation of one of our talks for the event. Dave Raynard, the CEO of Dream Reality Interactive (DRI) will be talking to attendees about the life of a young development studio in The Terrible Twos: The DRI Story So Far. “Dream Reality Interactive is two years old. Horror adventure indie game Lucius is back for a third installment. During all of the hullabaloo of GamesCom, a subdued trailer from Developer Shiver Games quietly arrived. Developers describe the synopsis as follows: “ Lucius is back. In a whole new narrative experience, he now returns to his old neighborhood of Winter Hill. The path will be a difficult one, with trials and tribulations waiting ahead. Has he made the right choices? Is it finally time to end it all?” Where to begin with this trailer…well, there’s an interconnected mystery to solve and lots and lots of death on display here. The violence and methodology seem to be deeply rooted in American nationalism and religion, with American flags being engulfed in flames. Supernatural forces remove one man’s skullcap, while the Ku Klux Klan lynches a black man in the next scene. The trailer seems to imply that due to malevolent influence, violence is escalating and will only intensify if the source is not destroyed. I’ll be honest. There are serious Omen and Children of the Corn movie vibes here. Besides a few frame-rate issues in the trailer and some of the character models looking wooden, I’m intrigued by the story and its artistic palette. Besides, a flame-wielding child never fails to impress.
