HOUSTON — Charles Schlagater will always remember the faint, tapping noise on the side of the concession stand at the Splendora Youth Baseball Fields. Upon investigating, he was met by the big eyes of Kade Contreras. The 4-year-old wanted snacks, but was too short for Schlagater to see him from behind the counter. Advertisement “Popsicles — the little guy always wanted popsicles,” Schlagater, 66, said Thursday night. So Schlagater built him a staircase, and for the next few months made a point to not let any of the “bigger kids” stand on Kade’s wooden steps. Kade Contreras, of Cleveland, died Wednesday after a family member’s treehouse fell on him on Christmas Eve in Southeast Texas.
