2017 NFL Draft Indianapolis Colts sign Firestone High School graduate Jerome Lane to contract

By Nate Ulrich Beacon Journal sports writer Growing up in Akron as the son of a former NBA player with the same name, Jerome Lane Jr. has wanted to become a professional athlete for virtually his entire life. The younger Lane, a University of Akron and Firestone High School product, achieved his goal Saturday when he agreed to a free agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts. Not bad for a prospect who's still in his infancy as a wide receiver. Lane, 21, began his career with the Zips as an outside linebacker/defensive end and later moved to safety before spending the past two seasons at receiver. Lane, 6-foot-2½ and 226 pounds, started all 12 games last season and compiled 62 catches for 1,018 yards and six touchdowns. “Coming from the MAC [Mid-American Conference] has given me a chip on my shoulder because people think that I can't compete at a higher talent than everybody else,” Lane said in March at the NFL Scouting Combine. “So that's given me a chip. “Then people doubting me, saying, ‘Well, Jerome Lane, he can't do this, he can't do that.’ The only person that knows what Jerome Lane can do is Jerome Lane. So the chip is so big on my shoulder I'm ready just to show everybody what I can do.” Now the Colts will give Lane a chance to silence the skeptics who motivate him. ...
