Nate Ulrich’s Browns analysis: Good first impression from draft warranted with understanding that QB decisions are defining

Analysts agree the Browns are significantly better on paper after the three-day NFL Draft. Then again, the team should be upgraded because it was well positioned with 11 picks heading into the marathon. Draft grades ought to be taken with a grain of salt because no one can be sure how these players will pan out until two or three years from now, but if you view the grades as a sort of first impression, the Browns made a good one. They received an A from CBSSports.com’s Pete Prisco, an A- from Sports Illustrated’s Chris Burke, NFL.com’s Chad Reuter and CBSSports.com’s Rob Rang and a B from SBNation.com’s Dan Kadar and ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. B feels like an appropriate grade for a good, but not great first impression. Most sane people probably would have rather seen the Browns fill a dire need at wide receiver by drafting at least one, which they didn’t, and avoid Florida defensive tackle Caleb Brantley (sixth round, No. 185 overall) because he allegedly punched a woman in the face April 13 and might be cut in a hurry depending on the outcome of the team’s investigation and other factors. Again, it wasn’t a great first impression. But because this is a quarterback-starved franchise we’re talking about, this draft will ultimately be defined not only by how the career of Texas A&M defensive end and No. 1 overall pick Myles Garrett unfolds, but also by the decisions involving the QBs that ultimately led to the selection of Notre Dame q ...
