Saints get value, fill needs, take risks in 2017 draft

It is safe to say that the NFL Draft is a crap shoot, full of doubt, land mines, and surprises. The 2017 process was no exception, including for the New Orleans Saints. The first three picks made by New Orleans were players that the Saints had rated higher on their board then when they were selected. That, in itself, is a good thing, provided your evaluation squares with the projected value of the players. Going into the draft, the clear needs for the Saints were on defense, particularly a corner, a rush end or linebacker and perhaps even a safety. Offensively, the desire was a second and third down hybrid running back, a wide receiver, a tackle and even a quarterback. The Saints liked both Deshaun Watson and Pat Mahomes but were not willing to pull daring moves to trade up to get Mahomes as Kansas City, trading up to get Watson as Houston did or making the dramatic move to trade up as the Bears did with Mitchell Trubisky. They liked Alvin Kamara and, for the ninth time in the current regime, traded up to get the man they wanted. From a need perspective, the Saints succeeded in filling the need for a corner with Marshon Lattimore, they got a pair of potential pass rush projects in Trey Hendrickson and Al-Quadin Muhammad, got their tackle in Ryan Ramczyk and their safety in Marcus Williams.
