Is The Mets' Matt Harvey A Baseball Villain Or A Career Hero?

When the Mets’ Matt Harvey takes the mound against the Washington Nationals today, all eyes will be on him.  The 26 year-old ace has become a lightning rod for commentary and controversy in the past several days for publicly commenting that his doctor has suggested that he cap his number of innings pitched at 180 in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery. Since he’s already over 165 innings before today’s start, this would mean that the Mets wouldn’t be able to rely on him in the playoffs, which they’re well-positioned to make. That Harvey waited this deep into the season to make the innings cap an issue, that power agent Scott Boras has been muddying the waters as his mouthpiece and that this cautiousness belies Harvey’s earlier bravado and prickliness over choices the Mets have made to protect his arm throughout the season (briefly moving to a six-man roster, for example) has attracted the palpable ire of sports columnists and average fans alike.
