UNI NOTES 05.01.16: Base-‘Birds host NAIA West, UBC’s Loffler and Davis to NFL camps and all the rest

VANCOUVER — The UBC Thunderbirds have helped themselves set the table for post-season success, and the best part is that they begin the playoffs at home. Lucas Soper’s two-run single drove in a pair as part of a three-run third, before Mike Orosz and Kyle McComb each scored on a wild-pitch as the ‘Birds added two more in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead, holding on to secure a 5-4 road win over the Oregon Tech Hustlin’ Owls. The victory not only gave UBC three wins in four weekend games against the Owls, but also second place in the NAIA West (23-12, 37-18 overall), and that means the Thunderbirds will play host to the NAIA West grouping championships Friday and Saturday at Thunderbird Park. Powerhouse Lewis-Clark State finished first but don’t figure in the final standings as the automatic host to the NAIA World Series. After sweeping Oregon Tech by scores of 11-6 and 13-1 on Saturday, UBC stumbled in its opener Sunday, falling 4-3. However ‘Birds picher Curtis Taylor (9-3) responded in the finale, surrendering four runs while striking out nine and walking just one over six innings to get the win. Tyler Gillies pitched three innings of shutout relief, fanning three Owls, incuding two in the bottom of the ninth, en route to his sixth save of the campaign. FOOTBALL Taylor Loffler and Terrell Davis didn’t hear their name called over the weekend during the NFL draft, but the UBC Thunderbirds’ free safety and linebacker will get a look ...
