Most of the news coming out of West Virginia has been about coal -- whether it is the downfall of an industry or a coal baron. But not nearly as much has been said about the woes besetting another player there, and in Ohio: Dupont, which is now in the midst of defending lawsuits tied to its chemical called C8. The two states are particularly dependent on the chemical sector for jobs and economic growth -- companies that produce the offshoots that go into so many consumer products used around the world. In the case of Dupont, it started to phase-out C8 from the market in 2014 after it was determined that it caused a number of cancers linked thyroid and testicular issues. C8 is the chemical used to manufacture stain-resistant Teflon and Stain Master carpet. “(M)anagement is concerned about the possible liability resulting from long-term C8 exposure to our employees and to the population in the surrounding communities and those downriver from the plant, since we don’t know the ultimate effect of C8 on the human body and that the potential liability resulting from C8 exposure is large,” says a E.I. du Pont de Nemours document written in 1986.
