Manchester United is one of the most popular Football club in the world. In India they have a huge fan base and so when a connection with the country comes up it does mean something special. http://ift.tt/291zhAO Now suppose a player born in India played for United? Heart-stopping right? But it has happened, and that too over a hundred years ago. George Hunter was the first India-born player to play for the Red Devils He was born in Nowshehra, British India (in present-day Pakistan) and in his pre-Football career was a part of the Royal West Kent Regiment in Maidstone. Nicknamed 'Cocky', Hunter had a history of wild temperament and for being embroiled in a number of controversies. He was out of the military in 1907 on charges of theft, but he did return eventually. In between his footballing career took off. After a stint with Chelsea, he joined Manchester United. After making his debut against Aston Villa in 1914, Hunter would go on to become the captain for Manchester United after proving himself at the club and entering into the regular playing eleven. Reuters However, his wild ways and breach of regulations were a constant problem for the club as it also affected his professional life. Finally, United cancelled his contract in 1915 after yet another unsavoury training ground incident. It is interesting that he played for Chelsea and United. If club rivalries were as intense back then one can imagine how much bitterness ...
