South LA hosts gun violence vigils

California Assemblyman Mike Gipson, who represents the 64th District, organized the night's events and was set to attend all of them. The services are part of a continuing effort to reduce gun violence in the district, Gipson told KPCC. Each of the five locations were chosen based on the number of gun-related crimes that occur in that area, he said. Attendants will be asked to sign the names of loved ones on the assemblyman's legislative bill that he plans to take to Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday, alongside other members of the state Assembly, Gipson said. The Ghost Gun Bill would require people who make their own guns to register them, receiving a serial number and undergoing a background check, according to Gipson. The legislation was introduced six months ago and received 45 votes Wednesday to be sent to the state Senate. He said he hopes it will reach the governor's desk by August. This also comes a day after National Gun Violence Awareness Day and two days after a shooting on the UCLA campus. The vigils will be held at the following locations: 5:30 p.m.— South L.A.
