Chinese telecom giant Xiaomi has recently purchased 1,500 patents from Microsoft Corp, including ones on cloud computing and voice communication. Beginning September 2016, Xiaomi devices, including Mi 5, Mi Max, Mi 4s, Redmi Note 3 and Redmi 3, will come pre-installed with Skype and Microsoft Office apps. Microsoft had previously partnered with it to deliver a beta Windows ROM to Mi 4 and a Windows 10 build for the Mi Pad. As The Wall Street Journal noted, the company is collecting intellectual property en mass to extend their market globally.This move shall allow them to expand it reaches in India and China, which are the leading smartphone markets in the world. Senior VP Wang Xiang said: An important step forward to support [the company’s] expansion internationally. Microsoft too expressed similar views and commented that it’s dealings with Xiaomi should provide Innovative user experiences on the devices.
