The NFL combine exists to evaluate prospects. But when the Super Bowl champion Broncos arrived in Indianapolis in February, their focus shifted to a superstar developed under their watch: Von Miller. They wanted to secure the all-pro outside linebacker long-term. They offered him $17 million a season, beginning a grinding process between the Broncos and Miller’s agent. Joby Branion. Proposals, missed deadlines, animosity, threats of a holdout, and a final push Friday, July 8 by general manager John Elway produced a six-year, $114.5 million agreement with $70 million guaranteed. Miller punctuated the moment of agreement by tweeting “For Life.” As Broncos quarterback Mark Sanchez summed up: “Both sides had the same goal and now we can start camp with the whole squad.” The Broncos averted a potential season-dooming distraction. But it left one heck of a story in its wake on how the Broncos agreed to make Miller the NFL’s second-highest paid player behind Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. The scene behind the curtain offers a peek into how difficult this landmark contract was to secure.
