OSU Community Mourns Death of Basketball Player

STILLWATER, Okla.-- Tyrek Coger had only been in Stillwater for 17 days when his Basketball dream came to an abrupt halt. "Dreams are supposed to begin here. They're not supposed to end. Unfortunately in this case, there's not a happy ending with this," said OSU Athletic Director, Mike Holder. The Cowboy Basketball forward was a junior college transfer from Raleigh, North Carolina. The Basketball team had just finished a workout running the steps at Boone Pickens Stadium Thursday night. Coaches say Coger did not appear to be in distress during the exercise. "But at the end, he sat down at the top of the stairs. Some individuals from the Basketball staff and team went up and checked on him, saw there were some issues," said OSU Communications Director, Gary Shutt. 911 was called at 5:04. Help arrived at 5:08. Coger got to Stillwater Medical Center at 5:48 and was pronounced dead at 6:23. "Making that phone call to a mother is ... there's no words," said an emotional head Basketball coach, Brad Underwood. The medical examiner released the cause of death as cardiomegaly with left ventricular hypertrophy. Cardiomegaly is an enlarged heart. OSU officials say their athletes undergo a battery of tests. "We go through a series, a thorough series of tests which includes blood work, a complete family history questionnaire to determine any concerns that would prohibit an athlete from participating in any of our sports," said Shutt.
