After years of bad Baseball, there’s a brighter tomorrow for the Rockies. But will manager Walt Weiss get to see it? “This is my 25th year in the major leagues. So I guess I’m approaching ‘lifer’ status,” Weiss said Friday. We sat together in the Colorado dugout, basking in the fading sunshine of summer, well aware of the northerly breeze blowing in a change of seasons. The onset of autumn reminds any guy past his 50th birthday that nothing lasts forever. “How long you going to keep writing? Until you’re 102?” cracked Weiss, taking aim in the exchange of friendly barbs we’ve enjoyed for two decades. We both, however, knew what this conversation was about: Is it time the Rockies make a change at manager? In four seasons as manager, the record of Weiss was 278-355 after the opening game of a weekend series against San Diego. There’s no two ways about it. His record stinks. In the dugout, Weiss again uttered one of his favorite phrases: “It’s a bottom-line business.” His contract expires with the club after the final 14 games in the regular season. I think Weiss has earned the right to return. If the Rockies adhere to the loyalty long espoused as a core value by franchise owner Dick Monfort, showing Weiss the door would be the height of hypocrisy, whether the next manager would be promoted from within the organization or Colorado went outside to hire a skipper with the mind-set of a pitcher, such as Bud Black.
