Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez dies at 24

Major League Baseball is in a state of mourning this morning after Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez died Saturday night following a boat accident. The team confirmed the news on Sunday morning. “The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at a very difficult time,” the Marlins announced in a statement. The Marlins also cancelled their series finale game against the Atlanta Braves this afternoon. Fernandez was one of three people killed in the boating accident after the Coast Guard found the boat overturned at around 3:00 a.m. No word on who else was on the boat with Fernandez at the time of the accident. Fernandez made his Major League debut in 2013 and won the NL Rookie of the Year with a 12-6, 2.19 ERA. He was sidelined for most of 2014 and 2015 with Tommy John Surgery among other injuries, but returned to form this season when he went 16-8 with a 2.68 ERA. He made his last start on September 20th when he recorded 12 strikeouts in a 1-0 win over the Washington Nationals. He was slated to start Monday against the New York Mets. Off the field, Fernandez recently announced he was going to be a father . Fernandez was just 24 years old. ...
