Teddy Ballgame

Source: www.bikeforums.net --- Thursday, September 15, 2016
Living in Boston for the last 24 years and being a Baseball fan, I am constantly reminded of Ted Williams, that crotchety hitting machine now resting in a cryogenic chamber (or at least his head is). Seemed appropriate, then, that I put in a snipe on this Sears Free Spirit, Ted Williams edition frameset that came up on eBay. I've long wondered about these bikes: They were built by Puch in the mid 70s, I believe, are full 531 frame and fork (takes a 27.2mm seat post), but came with pretty crap components and a kickstand plate. Hard to imagine what Sears saw as the niche. Still, they sold enough of them that they appear now with some regularity. I've built this one up as a flat-land commuter: SRAM two-speed automatic shifting hub, 35mm Vittoria Hyper Rando tires, V-O chain guard, Electra 50.4 bcd crankset, Weinmann CP brakes, Campy seat post and Brooks B17, Nitto dirt drop stem and flat bars. I commuted on it today, and it felt smooth and agile. I'll probably fit it with fenders at some point though clearance at the rear brake bridge is a bit tight. ...
