Goodyear wheels out college sculptures for upcoming Cotton Bowl game

You couldn’t blame California sculptor — and professional Baseball pitcher — Blake McFarland if he feels a bit on a roll about his art these days. McFarland works where few other artists tread. Tires are his main medium. His latest two works are made entirely of Goodyear tires, commissioned by the Akron tire maker, to honor the two teams in the upcoming Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic football game Monday in AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas. The artwork was publicly unveiled Thursday in Texas. McFarland and assistants made by hand nearly 7-foot-tall replicas of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Bucky Badger and Western Michigan University’s Bronco. The Wisconsin sculpture weighs in at about 375 pounds, while Western Michigan’s is at 400 pounds; combined, they use 925 feet of cut-apart, reshaped and woven tires. McFarland used a mix of new and used tires, including Wranglers, and recycled tire mold — about 500 Goodyear-brand tires in total. He figures he spent 125 hours on Bucky Badger and 175 hours on the bronco. Wood and plastic also helped give shape and support to the pieces. “It’s an honor to bring together my two passions, tire art and athletics, to create these sculptures on behalf of an iconic brand like Goodyear for an equally iconic bowl game like the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic,” McFarland said in a prepared statement.
