The Akron RubberDucks are expanding the safety netting at the city-owned Canal Park. The minor-league Baseball team announced Friday that it will stretch the netting to the far end of the dugouts for this coming season to protect fans from hard-hit foul balls. The current netting will be removed and replaced with a Field Green Ultra Cross Knotless Dyneema Ball Safety System Net. The RubberDucks, the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, said the new netting “will have a minimal impact on the fan-viewing experience due to the thinner material, green color, and knotless construction.” “Fan safety is our top priority and paramount to having great, fun-filled experience at the ballpark,” RubberDucks General Manager Jim Pfander said in a prepared statement. “We commend Mayor [Dan] Horrigan and the city of Akron for being so proactive on the issue of fan safety. This new netting will help protect fans without taking away from the sightlines or gameday experience they have come to expect when they come to Canal Park.” The new netting is expected to cost $50,000 and will be paid for by the city. Promats Athletics from Salisbury, N.C., will begin the installation in late March. It will be in place for the home opener April 13 against the Trenton Thunder.
