Welcome to February, the month when pitchers and catchers report to spring training, and also the month when Baseball really comes back into our lives in the form of exhibition games. So, of course, we’re talking about Babe Ruth traveling through time and space. Don’t worry, it’s in the framework of Mailbag Friday, and a discussion about the 1927 Yankees, the 1961 Yankees, and the 2018 Yankees. Certainly, this year’s Yankees would love to do what each of those predecessors did, and win the World Series after hitting a boatload of home runs. Is it time to forget about the luxury tax savings plan, and just go for it? Maybe! Should the Yankees just do what it takes now to bring back Todd Frazier at third base? Maybe! Is this an episode in which a flat-out guess is made that this is exactly what will happen? Well, just go ahead and listen to the darn thing, okay? Thank you. Also on this show — actually, at the start of this show — some news to wrap up the week. Oscar Gamble’s death is sad, but he will be fondly remembered for many reasons. David Hale, last seen in the major leagues for two innings with the 2016 Rockies, is now reportedly with the Yankees on a minor-league contract. And, at the end of the show, a rant about Major League Baseball’s continued desire to tinker with things in the name of “pace of play,” which somehow they conflate with “length of game.” It turned out that this was not the week that we saw the floodgates ...
