Scoreboard assembled to honor late Geneva graduate

GENEVA – Family and friends rallied to raise $18,000 to pay for a new Baseball scoreboard at Geneva High School in memory of Nick Hanson, who died in a car crash last year. Michael Davis and his wife, Lynette, appeared before aldermen at the Geneva Committee of the Whole meeting in January to begin publicizing their efforts to raise the funds. “We raised $25,000,” Michael Davis said. “We kept raising money until it was determined what scoreboard we were going to buy. The rest of the money we donated to the Baseball program for new equipment.” Craig Shodeen had said the Shodeen Family Foundation would match donations up to $9,000 for the scoreboard and it did, Michael Davis said. The dedication of the scoreboard is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 19 at the Baseball field, Michael Davis said. The $18,000 paid for the scoreboard, its installation and the surveying of the field for the installation, he said. At the January Committee of the Whole meeting, Michael Davis had said that the Hanson family “epitomize what a Geneva family is all about. They are about the community. And now, the community is about the Hansons.” Nick Hanson’s death was a tragedy that “hit our community very hard,” Michael Davis said.
