Europe’s must-attend game developers conference. devcom – the official GamesCom developer conference – takes place for the third time this year from 18-19 August 2019 in. We talked to Nicola Balletta, head of program and ex-editor-in-chief of Making Games magazine, about why you should go to Cologne two days before GamesCom and what to expect at the conference. The market for conferences is becoming increasingly dense – what sets devcom apart in the mass of conferences? Nico Balletta: The number of games industry conferences does rise for sure, but I think it’s important to look at where this rise in numbers takes place and which groups these events target. They are born out of specific needs – be it to make the rest of the world aware of a still rather unknown market, or simply to bring in knowledge the local developer community might otherwise not get their hands on. Most of these conferences grow and develop alongside the markets they represent, and there are tons of examples for that. With devcom, we clearly set our goals very high: becoming THE must-attend event in Europe. I’m not saying that we’re there already, but the point I’m trying to make simply is: If you don’t have the ambition to raise the bar to another level, then why even try? And being a first-hand witness to how the event evolved over only two editions, how it set its own benchmarks higher and higher already, I can clearly say that we all have the motivation ...
