A Toronto film industry executive has withdrawn thousands of dollars from York University’s film program due to a mural he says is “anti-Israel.” The mural, which is currently on display at YorkU’s student centre, depicts a person holding what appears to be a Palestinian flag with a borderless map of Israel. Paul Bronfman said of the mural, “It made me sick to my stomach and very angry. We live in an amazing city, an amazing country, and to have this happening under our noses is disgusting. It’s subtly anti-Semitic and anti-Israel. It’s anti-Canadian.” Bronfman withdrew funding from the program last Friday. The United Way of Toronto and York Region has reached the halfway point of its $100 million fundraising goal , the charity announced yesterday. In a celebration gala at the Metro Convention Centre, president and CEO Susan McIssac said, “Everybody’s feeling really great about it. It was a tough year so people are really, really pleased,” citing 170,000 individual and corporate donations as the key to its success. The funds raised benefit charity and more than 200 partner agencies, including the Rexdale Women’s Centre and York Region’s Alzheimer Society. New York Jets Agrees to Compensate Cheerleaders for Poor Pay

NFL cheerleaders have notched another win against the league in their ongoing battle to earn at least minimum wage. The New York Jets agreed last week to pay cheerleaders nearly $324,000 to settle claims first filed in May 2014 . The class-action lawsuit filed by a woman who goes by Krystal C. claimed that she and other cheerleaders were paid less than the minimum wage. They earned $150 per home game but were not compensated for practice time and promotional appearances, nor were they reimbursed for expenses like hair straightening. (The Jets cheerleaders—known as The Flight Crew—are required to have straight hair. ) The lawsuit against the Jets is one of five filed against NFL teams by cheerleaders. The Oakland Raiders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Buffalo Bills, and Cincinnati Bengals faced similar suits. In September, a former Milwaukee Bucks cheerleader sued the NBA team for violating the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act and Wisconsin’s prevailing wage and payment laws. The settlement in the Jets’ case, which will be paid out to 52 current and former cheerleaders, is the latest in a series of concessions and legislative victories that have gone cheerleaders’ way. The first came in September 2014, when the Raiders—the first NFL team to get hit by a cheerleader lawsuit— agreed to a $1.25 million settlement with 90 former cheerleaders. June Scobee Rodgers — widow of Challenger commander Dick Scobee and longtime spokeswoman for the group — is passing the torch to daughter Kathie Scobee Fulgham. Fulgham — not Rodgers — will be on the stage for Thursday morning’s ceremony at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. And making a rare appearance in the audience will be schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe’s son, Scott, with his own family. “It’s going to be wonderful to watch the pages turn,” Rodgers said earlier this week. The second generation “can now speak for our family and speak for the nation,” she said, adding that she’s looking forward to these grown astronauts’ children “sharing their stories, their beliefs and their leadership.” For the seven astronauts’ loved ones, Jan. 28, 1986, remains fresh in their minds. Steven McAuliffe, a federal judge in Concord, New Hampshire, still declines interviews about his late wife Christa, who was poised to become the first schoolteacher in space.
