Apple To Pay Ireland €13 Billion In Back Taxes: Selective Tax Treatment Declared Illegal State Aid

The European Commission has slapped Apple with an enormous fine today after it was found to have operated a tax avoidance scheme. At €13 billion this is Europe’s largest ever tax penalty and the monies will be paid to the Irish government. The ruling effective bans any 'special status' for particular companies in a EU member declaring it 'illegal state aid'.
