Letters to the editor: UA’s devastating decision and ‘no’ in Coventry — April 25

The University of Akron has made another decision that only parallels the devastating decision of eliminating the Baseball team or closing E.J. Thomas Hall. Right on campus is one of the university’s most beloved treasures, the Center for Child Development, where my daughter has attended for three years. Frustratingly, the board of trustees voted to close the center down, then threw manipulated data to the media to make their decision seem appropriate. They won’t show you the center’s data for each year over the last five years showing the financial improvements and successes at eliminating deficits. Nowhere will you find in the board minutes that there was a waiting list for families to enter the center and that the university refused to open the vacant room at the center and bring in more money because of its hiring freeze. Nowhere in the board minutes will you find that in practically the same breath, they closed the Center for Child Development because of financial strain but hired a new basketball coach making hundreds of thousands of dollars. The university is providing millions of dollars in subsidies to athletics. This clearly shows children of the future aren’t worth the investment because they aren’t playing a sport. Parents, faculty, alumnae, staff and community organizations are not giving up. We will not be silenced. We will continue to fight for the children as long as necessary.
