Baseball | Pitchers Struggle, Hoyas Lose 4th Straight

The Georgetown Baseball team’s recent slide in performance continued Wednesday night, as the Hoyas lost 10-2 to the UMBC Retrievers (14-17, 7-5 America East). The loss came on the heels of a losing weekend series against Seton Hall (22-16, 5-4 Big East), where Georgetown (21-19, 0-6 Big East) dropped to 0-6 in Big East play. Graduate outfielder Zach Racusin notched three hits and a walk in Wednesday’s contest, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances. Racusin also collected two outfield assists, throwing out runners at third base and at home. “I definitely take a lot of pride in my defense,” Racusin said. “When there's an opportunity to help the team out and generate runs, whether it's defensively or offensively, it's very much important to us.” Despite the strong defense from the graduate outfielder, Blue and Gray pitching faltered. Starting pitcher Nick Leonard surrendered two runs in his 8/3 innings of work, while the Georgetown bullpen continued to struggle, allowing seven runs over 7/3 innings. The loss marked Georgetown’s fourth consecutive losing effort, and the seventh loss in its past eight ballgames. “I think we're pressing as a whole,” Wilk said. “We're trying to hit a seven-run home run, trying to make the perfect pitch, the perfect throw, or the perfect catch, and the game's not meant to be played that way.” After being swept at home by Creighton, the Hoyas’ conference struggles continued against Seton Hal ...
