Astros reliever pegs umpire with wild pickoff attempt at tense moment in crazy Game 2

LOS ANGELES — In most Baseball games, Chris Devenski’s wild, 10th-inning pickoff attempt nailing second-base umpire Laz Diaz and caroming back to second baseman Jose Altuve would register as the craziest and unlikeliest thing to happen. But in the Astros’ wild, 11-inning, 7-6 win over the Dodgers in Game 2 on Wednesday night, this is just one crazy and unlikely thing that happened. The reliever swiftly fired to second base to try to surprise baserunner Enrique Hernandez, but the throw sailed way wide to the left-field side of the bag. If the ball leaves the infield, Hernandez undoubtedly would’ve advanced to third, and there’s a non-zero chance the ensuing entropy would’ve led to the Dodgers winning the game right then. But it so happens Laz Diaz was standing in exactly the right spot to stop the ball’s flight. Devenski’s throw hit Diaz so squarely and so directly that, in a different situation, one might suspect the pitcher was trying to settle some psychotic grudge against the ump. Here, the Astros simply caught a lucky break in a bonkers Baseball game that saw the teams combine for seven runs in two extra innings as both bullpens neared their limits. Running list ...
