Akron 62, Western Michigan 53: Zips earn 10th consecutive win in what coach Keith Dambrot calls ‘weird game’

The University of Akron men’s Basketball team could very easily be accused of theft in its 62-53 Mid-American Conference win over Western Michigan on Friday night at Rhodes Arena. Point guard Antino Jackson led the Zips, who stretched their winning streak to 10 games, with 15 points and four assists, followed by forward Jake Kretzer with 13 points and three rebounds. Center Isaiah Johnson led UA on the glass with nine rebounds. Broncos guard Thomas Wilder led all scorers with 26 points and added nine rebounds in the losing effort. Had the outcome been based on pure hustle, it would have been different, but the Zips, with the help of early firepower, outlasted the Broncos, who bested UA in most significant statistical categories. Coach Keith Dambrot called it a weird game, which probably was an apt description. “Be disappointed in this and that, but somehow [we] win,” Dambrot said. “I think that’s better than the alternative, don’t you?” Given the Broncos’ 24-11 advantage in offensive rebounds, the fact the game was close until the latter stages, was not a surprise. The Broncos (6-8, 0-3 MAC) outrebounded UA 50-35. “I think it’s an aberration, so I’m not going to worry about it,” Dambrot said. “They went hard. We had a rough time boxing out.
