A debut goal from striker Jezz Goldson-Williams steered Netherton United into the semi-finals of the Northants Junior Cup yesterday (January 9). Goldson-Williams became available for the Peterborough League Premier Division side after his scheduled match for higher-level Deeping Rangers was postponed in the morning. And he came on as a late substitute to score the final goal in a 4-3 win over United Counties Division One outfit Wellingborough Whitworth at The Grange. Netherton have now beaten three UCL Division One side on their way to the last four. “Jezz called me in the morning to say he was available,” Netherton manager Jon Harrison revealed. “He trained with us in the summer and we signed him on to play for us, but he also signed to play for Deeping in the UCL Premier Division so he hadn’t actually had a game for us. “He’s a top player and I was glad I had a space on the substitutes’ bench for him. It was a cool finish that won us the game. “We didn’t play that well in the first-half so I had to have some stern words with the team at half-time. They responded and once we got in front we defended very well for the final 10 minutes or so. “It’s another great win for us in this competition. We fancy our chances against anyone.” Netherton showed their battling qualities in this match as they were behind on three separate occasions.
