Days before No. 1 Clemson and No. 2 Alabama square off in the national championship game in Glendale, Arizona, CFP chairman Bill Hancock remained staunch in his stance that the playoff semifinals will continue to be played on New Year’s Eve, despite a 34.4 percent drop in television viewership from last season’s numbers, going from 28,271,000 to 18,552,000 according to numbers provided by the Associated Press. “I don’t anticipate any changes for next year,” Hancock said Friday from the Camelback Inn Resort and Spa. “One year does not a trend make.” Hancock said the CFP committee could reevaluate dates for a potential four-day weekend over New Year’s in 2019, but not before. The Cotton Bowl semifinal between Alabama and Michigan State — a 38-0 drubbing by the Tide — drew a 9.6 rating for ESPN compared to 15.2 for Ohio State-Alabama in the Sugar Bowl last Jan. 1 — a 36.8 percent drop. The earlier game, the Orange Bowl semifinal between Clemson and Oklahoma, drew a 9.1 rating — a 38.5 percent drop from last year’s Rose Bowl, which ...
