What A Week For The Houston Cougars

Congratulations to Tom Herman and the Houston Cougars. There were some that said it couldn’t be done. That is taking a non power-5 Football team and turning it into a nationally relevant program. I am sure legions of others had hope, but thought it might take a little time for a turnaround. Not Herman. Patience might be a virtue but it doesn’t seem to be part of the head Coogs DNA. He does however have the winner’s chromosomes. Herman came to town just hours after celebrating a national championship with Ohio State last January and immediately starting talking the talk. He has spent the last four months, walking the walk. Herman talked about pushing his new team through the toughest pre-season Football camp in the country. Then he almost demanded that the fans show up at the games. “These kids have worked too hard to play in front of a half empty stadium,” he said over and over. When the season started at the upper deck at TDECU Stadium remained unoccupied, the Cougars just started winning and didn’t stop. There was the road W at Louisville. Then an improbable comeback at home against Memphis, followed by a destruction of a good Navy team. Houston simply toyed with Temple in the American Conference Championship Game that sent the Cougars packing for the Peach Bowl in Atlanta and a date with Florida State.
