In a thrilling, back-and-forth game, the Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the Clemson Tigers 45-40 in the College Football Playoff championship. The win means that Alabama’s Nick Saban is now the best college football coach of all time. Five national titles—and four in the last seven years—seals it. Yes, former Alabama coach, Paul “Bear” Bryant has six national titles, as does early 20th-century Michigan coach, Fielding Yost (who happened to be from Fairview, WV, only eleven miles from Saban’s childhood home). But the championships of both of these men took place in a less “scientific” era in college football. In 1964, Alabama, under Bryant, “won” the national title (awarded by the AP), and then promptly lost its bowl game to Texas. This does not take away from Bryant’s accomplishments. But it does enhance Saban’s.
