Xbox One May Be Getting A New APU Based On AMD’s Polaris Architecture

We just received an interesting rumor about Microsoft’s Xbox One. It seems like the console might be getting a revision based on AMD’s new Polaris GPU architecture (of which you can read a lot more here ). Several users have noticed the name Polaris when using their Xbox One console. In fact, there are tweets about this dating back to October 2014. Now, there’s also evidence of this via a screendump of someone who was using Netflix on his console. Moreover, AMD’s President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lisa Su released this comment during the latest Earnings Call for Q3 2015: Demand from Sony and Microsoft indicates that the record setting sales pace of this generation of game consoles will remain strong. We also remain on track to begin revenue shipments of our additional semi-custom design wins starting in the second half of 2016. It seems like shipments of this Polaris based Xbox One revision could begin as early as Q3 2016, then. Polaris, much like NVIDIA’s Pascal, is expected to deliver 2.5X performance/watt ratio when compared to the previous GPU architecture. The implications are obviously very significant. Could this new Xbox One be more powerful than the one currently available on the market? It’s too early to tell right now, but it doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility.
