England’s women collapse as Australia secure World T20 final place

Source: www.theguardian.com --- Wednesday, March 30, 2016
Australia 132-6; England 127-7 - Australia win by five runs • England batting crumbles again after bright start from openers For the third time in consecutive World Twenty20s, England’s race was ended by Australia. This time, it was in the semi-finals. Previous defeats came at the final hurdle but this one, by five runs, might smart the most. It was a familiar tale for England at this World T20: a simple run chase complicated by a loss of nerve and poor decision-making. Only this time they were unable to get out of jail. What at one point was 66 needed off 60 balls, with nine wickets in hand, mutated into 13 needed from the final over. England could muster only seven as Australia, who themselves were caught short in certain areas, celebrated sealing passage to their fourth World T20 final in a row. Continue reading... ...

Microsoft’s Build 2016 event: start time, live blog, and how to watch

Source: nerdlynews.32hours.com --- Wednesday, March 30, 2016
See the original posting on The Verge Microsoft returns to San Francisco today to hold its Build 2016 developers conference. It’s an annual event that’s designed to give software developers a better understanding of what Microsoft is planning for the rest of the year. In previous years we’ve seen some pretty big announcements, but we’re expecting today’s keynote to be a little more low-key. Microsoft is expected to detail its next major Windows 10 update, and the new features it contains. That could include bigger changes to Cortana, interactive Live Tiles, and improvements to the notification center. It might still be a little early for Microsoft to cover all of its planned features for future Windows 10 updates, but we’re still expecting some details. It wouldn’t be a… Continue reading… ...

How to Save More Disk Space with Compact OS on Windows 10

Source: www.makeuseof.com --- Wednesday, March 30, 2016
Compact OS is Microsoft’s newest take on handling factory resets. It decreases the operating system’s size using a combination of compression and software tricks. It also reduces the footprint of Windows apps. If you’re on Windows 10, you can use Compact OS. Enabling or disabling Compact OS is easy, too. And it shouldn’t have any impact on your computer’s performance. What Is Compact OS For? Computers with vast amounts of storage don’t need Compact OS. It’s most suitable for 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB eMMC modules or smaller SATA-attached Solid State Storage (SSD) devices. Implementing Compact OS frees around 1.5 GB (32-bit systems)... NFL Free Agency: Saints Salary Cap Update

Source: http://ift.tt/xdJvlX --- Wednesday, March 30, 2016
The Saints have more money available than you probably think they do... The New Orleans Saints are a surprising $3,604,470 under the salary cap as of today,  according to the NFLPA's website . Which, to be quite honest, is way more than I would have guessed. Particularly after signing Nick Fairley to a one-year contract earlier this week. Just this past Monday the team was listed as being a mere ~$230,000 under the cap. Obviously  the recent restructuring of the Cam Jordan and Thomas Morstead contracts gave the Saints a little breathing room. And there is still room to free up more money if necessary. If they can get Max Unger to restructure and/or Drew Brees to agree to an extension, they'll have even more money. But with the free agency market nearly tapped out, they shouldn't need much more other than to sign their draft picks. ...

Draft This Guy: Miles Killebrew, Safety, Southern Utah

Source: dabearsblog.com --- Wednesday, March 30, 2016
The Bears found a bonafide starting safety in the middle of the 2015 Draft. There may be another lurking in the middle of this year’s edition. From a piece a few months back at NFL.com: The scoop: “He’s a better football player than Shaq Thompson and Deone Bucannon were when they came out.” — Area scout on Southern Utah safety Miles Killebrew The skinny: That is high praise — Thompson and Bucannon both were first-round picks. However, we’re not surprised to hear such talk about Killebrew, who has accepted an invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl. He jumps off the tape and has a chance to be a name you’ll hear a lot leading up to the draft. Killebrew has good size at a little under 6-2 and 230 pounds. He’s been clocked at 4.45 in the 40. Everything we hear is that his character is impeccable. Why did I find myself watching a Southern Utah game with a dozen Guinness in me late one Saturday night? I have no idea. But I watched them play a second time to watch Killebrew alone. Killebrew reminds me of one of my favorite Bears safeties in recent memory: Tony Parrish. He’s fine with the ball in the air but seems most comfortable closing in on the football and hitting guys. The Bucannon comparisons are lofty praise (you will recall Deone love in this space prior to that draft) but Killebrew is going to be starting safety in the league. ...

Fox’s Ainsley Earhardt asked him about a career in politics during an interview at his annual Tim Tebow Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic in Florida. And his response? The ‘Stop Hillary’ campaign is on fire! Join the surging response to this theme: ‘Clinton for prosecution, not president’ “I don’t know in this time in my life,” he said, Time reported. “If there’s a chance you can make a difference someday in something, then that would be intriguing.” Tebow, 28, who currently works as a college football analyst for the SEC Network, also called the 2016 presidential campaign season a cycle of ups and downs. Can the Republican Party save itself? Richard Viguerie has the prescription in “Takeover.” “It’s been crazy, hasn’t it? It’s been a whirlwind, watching everything,” he said, Time reported. Spotify to Raise $1 Billion (Report)

Source: www.thewrap.com - Wednesday, March 30, 2016
Spotify may be losing money as the leading streaming-music service, but it’s making money elsewhere. The Swedish company is close to raising $1 billion in convertible debt from investors including private-equity firm TPG, hedge fund Dragoneer Investment Group and clients of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., the Wall Street Journal reported late Tuesday, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. The deal, expected to close at the end of this week, carries guarantees protecting the investors should Spotify make good on its goal of an initial public offering of shares within the next two years, the report said. Spotify didn’t immediately respond to TheWrap’s message seeking comment. Like many streaming-music service, Spotify is unprofitable despite the rapid growth in its sector among consumers. U.S. revenue from streamed music, especially the lucrative subscriptions where Spotify leads the world with 30 million members, surpassed sales from digital downloads last year. But the cost of music licenses to play those tunes gobbles up the lion’s share of the revenue Spotify and other services generate. Foxconn Agrees to Buy Sharp at Reduced Price

Source: time.com - Wednesday, March 30, 2016
(TAIPEI, Taiwan) — The Taiwanese company that assembles Apple’s iPhones agreed Wednesday to buy control of financially struggling Sharp Corp. for $3.5 billion in the first foreign takeover of a major — producer. The acquisition by Foxconn unites Sharp, a pioneering electronics brand founded in 1912, with a company six decades younger that is little known to consumers but has grown rapidly as a contract manufacturer for global brands. The commitment by Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., to buy 66 percent of Osaka-basedSharp followed weeks of uncertainty over what the Japanese company said was a deal at a higher price. “I am thrilled by the prospects for this strategic alliance and I look forward to working with everyone at Sharp,” said Foxconn founder Terry Gou in a statement. “We have much that we want to achieve and I am confident that we will unlock Sharp’s true potential and together reach great heights.” The price of 389 billion yen was a reduction of 100 billion yen, or about 20 percent, from the 489 billion yen ($4.4 billion) that Sharp said Feb. 25 that Foxconn had agreed to pay. The Taiwanese company said at that time it wasn’t ready to sign a deal. The companies gave no reason for the change but news reports suggested Foxconn was concerned about taking on additional liabilities it learned about late in negotiations. Track and field to compete at home in Stanford Invitational

From April 1-2, thousands of track and field athletes from 110 colleges and universities as well as high schools and unaffiliated programs will swarm to The Farm for the 41 st annual Stanford Invitational — a meet which offers qualifying opportunities for the NCAA preliminaries and for the US Olympic Team Trials. The Cardinal are looking to carry their success from a strong indoor season into outdoor competition. Stanford totaled five top four finishers at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships from March 11-12, including a third in the women’s DMR and a fourth in the men’s DMR. Additionally, junior Sean McGorty finished second in the 3000 meters and sophomore decathlete and Stanford record holder Harrison Williams, finished fourth in the heptathlon. Although freshman heptathlete Brittany McGee is currently healing from an injury and won’t be competing this weekend, she is still looking forward to the competition. “The whole team has been telling us that this meet is like no other that we will attend. The atmosphere is supposed to be like nothing else,” McGee said. “I’ve heard that all of our bleachers will be filled, people will line the fence around the track and the cheering will be so loud during races that you’ll barely be able to hear yourself think. Bruins have Devil of a time

Source: www.bostonherald.com - Wednesday, March 30, 2016
NEWARK, N.J. — Many times in recent days, we’ve heard the Bruins employ one of the most nonsensical cliches in sports: “We control our own destiny.” This, of course, is an absurd notion — the suggestion that destiny can be controlled. If there is such a thing as destiny, it refers to an inevitable, pre-determined outcome. Of course, it may well turn out that the destiny of this Bruins team is to miss the playoffs for the second successive spring.

U.N. Secretary-General Urges Countries to Accept More Refugees

Source: time.com - Wednesday, March 30, 2016
(BERLIN) — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday urged governments around the world to let in more people from Syria and “counter fear-mongering” about refugees. Ban spoke at a one-day conference in Geneva meant to further efforts to resettle Syrian refugees. The U.N. refugee agency wants to find places abroad over the next three years for one-tenth of the 4.8 million Syrian refugees who are crowded into countries in the surrounding region. “I ask that countries act with solidarity, in the name of our shared humanity, by pledging new and additional pathways for the admission of Syrian refugees,” Ban told the gathering of officials from over 90 countries. “These pathways can include resettlement or humanitarian admission, family reunions, as well as labor or study opportunities.” The conference heard appeals for solidarity from the countries surrounding Syria. Turkey, which hosts some 2.7 million Syrians, said the UNHCR’s target of resettling 10 percent of the refugees in the region is a good start but not enough. To date, 179,000 places have been pledged, according to Filippo Grandi, the U.N. high commissioner for refugees. Ban said countries can benefit from accepting refugees as they can bring new skills and experience to aging workforces. “Attempts to demonize them are not only offensive; they are factually incorrect,” he said. “I call on leaders to counter fear-mongering with reassurance, and to fight inaccurate inf

SEC Football Q&A: Who Are the X-Factors in the Division Title Races?

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
In the SEC, one player can make or break your division title campaign. Alabama rode running back Derrick Henry last year all the way to the national title, which resulted in a Heisman Trophy for the Yulee , Florida, native and an SEC record 2,219 yards. Georgia, on the other hand, saw its season go up in smoke when star running back Nick Chubb went down with a season-ending knee injury on his first carry in the loss to Tennessee in mid-October. Every team has an X-factor or two, and those players will likely determine who the participants will be in the 2016 SEC Championship Game. Who are those players? That question and more are answered in this week's edition of SEC Q&A.   In the SEC West, it's LSU quarterback Brandon Harris. The Tigers have all of the other pieces in place to make a run at the division title and perhaps more, with star running back Leonard Fournette back with talented wide receivers, a solid offensive line and a loaded defense that includes defensive lineman Lewis Neal, linebacker Kendell Beckwith , corner Tre'Davious White and safety Jamal Adams. But save for Zach Mettenberger's senior season in 2013, that quarterback position in Baton Rouge has been the college Football equivalent of a barren desert for the better part of a decade. It seems like it's Harris' job again to change that, although Purdue transfer Danny Etling —who's more suited to run what offensive coordinator Cam Cameron calls—will push him thi ...

Comedian Crushes Heckler With NFL Analogy

Source: www.sportsgrid.com --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
It’s an argument that’s been made by athletes about sports writers and commentators before: if you’ve never played the game you aren’t allowed to have an opinion about it. But that’s complete bullshit. We don’t say, “Scientists have never been one-celled organisms so how can they know how eukaryotes work?” because, obviously, knowledge isn’t exclusive to those who’ve experienced it first-hand. If it were, college would be insane. “Ugh, I gotta study for my Medieval History test tomorrow by impaling some non-believers.” Comedian Steve Hofstetter had to explain this concept to a heckler who just couldn’t let him continue cracking jokes about parents who think they’re special for raising a child (because he doesn’t have a child). Watch him take her down with an NFL analogy that perfectly illustrates why she should not have opened her mouth in the first place, below… ...

Man Trying to Contact Ex-Wife Surrenders After Hijacking EgyptAir Flight

Source: www.slate.com - Tuesday, March 29, 2016
A man who apparently hijacked a domestic EgyptAir flight in part to try and contact his ex-wife in Cyprus has surrendered without harming any of the plane's 55 passengers or its crew, reports say. The man, Seif Eldin Mustafa, demanded that EgyptAir flight MS181 from Alexandria to Cairo be diverted to Cyprus after threatening to detonate an explosive belt—which may or may not have been real, and which you can see in this picture: Here's where Cyprus is in relation to Egypt: From NBC: The hijacker spent the first three hours of the standoff demanding to speak to his Cypriot ex-wife, a high-level source close to the operation told NBC News.  Other demands were made as well, though they were not necessarily coherent: "He asked for asylum, he wanted to talk with someone from the European Union ... It seems that he was an unstable personality," the source explained, requesting anonymity due to the fluid nature of the investigation. The Guardian reports that Mustafa's ex-wife was apparently brought to the airport in the city of Larnaca where the flight landed and that he "is believed to have thrown a letter to her from the plane."

30 Players: Billy Burns’ Legs A Valuable Asset To Athletics

Source: detroit.cbslocal.com --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
By Rich Arleo  CBS Local Sports, in our  30 Players 30 Days  spring training feature, profiles one young player from each Major League Baseball team leading up to opening day. Billy Burns, Outfielder, Oakland Athletics 2015 season (Majors): 125 G, 520 AB, .294 BA, 5 HR, 42 RBI,  26 SB, .726 OPS The 2015 season was one of the most disappointing in years for the Oakland Athletics as they were unable to win 70 games for the first time since 1997. Executive vice president Billy Beane made his career as a general manager by doing a lot with a little, but his attempt at a radical overhaul after the ‘14 season did not live up to expectations. Fortunately, there were some bright spots, among them the emergence of young speedster Billy Burns. A 32nd-round pick in 2011 by the Washington Nationals, Burns was never a top prospect, but he had promising speed from the start. In his first full Minor League season at Class A, Burns swiped 38 bags in 113 games. He followed that up with an incredible 74 steals at two levels in ‘13. Burns continued to steal bases at a high rate in the Majors, but he ran into some struggles getting on base when he reached Triple-A and, for a short time, the Majors in 2014. The concern that Burns wouldn’t be able to hit big league pitching began to strength, but he quickly expelled that notion last season. Beginning the year at Triple-A, Burns hit .308 with five steals in 22 games before getting the callup to the A’s ...

ACC baseball power rankings 3/29

Source: http://ift.tt/PWGxcS --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
With three weeks of ACC play in the books,it's time for Tomahawk Nation's inaugural power rankings for the 2016 season. Three weeks into Atlantic Conference play, some teams are emerging as legitimate contenders for the conference title while others seem destined for the struggle to avoid finishing dead last in the ACC. To help distinguish the competitors, Tomahawk Nation will be providing a weekly power ranking of the entire conference, top to bottom. 1. Miami (20-4, 7-2 in ACC) The Hurricanes have opened conference play with a 7-2 start and won nine of their last ten including winning two of three games against Louisville and, most recently, sweeping Clemson. After the productive week, Miami has moved into No. 4 in the latest D1Baseball poll. This week: The 'Canes travel to Boca Raton to take on FAU in a midweek game before welcoming in No. 7 UNC for a weekend series in Miami. 2. Florida State (18-5, 6-1 in ACC) FSU has gotten off to a similarly hot start to conference play, sweeping the previously-undefeated Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and taking two of three games at Pittsburgh while winning the only game played against NC State this past weekend. With the 3-0 week last week,  the Seminoles shot up each of the college Baseball polls. This week: Florida State travels to Jacksonville today for its second game against the Florida Gators before making the trek to Chestnut Hill this weekend for a three-game set at Boston College. ...

A Shoulder Injury, a Spin Move and My Secret Mission to Become an NFL Receiver

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
The following is a first-person reflection on 2016 NFL draft prospect Braxton Miller 's journey from quarterback to wide receiver, as told to Bleacher Report's Sean Tomlinson .   Few people knew what was going on in the late night or early morning hours at the Ohio State practice facility.  That's because my transition from quarterback to wide receiver began as a stealth mission. It all started in June 2015. I would work with head coach Urban Meyer and wide receivers coach Zach Smith during the day, and then after hours, I logged extra time catching passes from Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett. We all had the same commitment, and the same devotion to secrecy: Don't tell anyone. You see, after it became clear that I would no longer be playing quarterback, I had to dedicate myself to a new challenge. A brand new skill set, in fact. I had always wanted to succeed as a football player; nothing changed there, except the position. So while I knew I had to knock off a thick layer of receiver rust, I also knew that once I put my mind to it, I would find a way to get it done. Every workout, then, every day of those cloak-and-dagger training sessions, I saw another opportunity to work toward that goal. To tap into my competitive drive, and find a way to meet this new challenge. But my drive and flexibility didn't just start by running "sluggos" away from prying eyes. Going back to high school, I had always been a versatile player, willing to ...

Windows 10 expected to get OS X’s Handoff feature in future update

Source: http://ift.tt/ot3cHZ --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
Microsoft is reportedly working to bring OS X’s excellent Handoff functionality to Windows 10. According to sources, the feature would be part of Continuum, and would allow users to sync apps between devices so they can pick up where they left off. If you’ve never used OS X, Handoff — which was first introduced with Yosemite in 2014 — lets you sync app content between OS X and iOS devices. You can start reading a webpage in Safari on iPhone and pick up where you left off on your iMac in just one click. Handoff has lots of other uses, too; users can sync notes, emails, messages, documents in apps like Pages and Numbers, and even phone calls. And according to WinBeta, similar functionality is coming to Windows 10 in a future update. “According to my sources who are familiar with the matter, upcoming improvements to Continuum will introduce “OS X Handoff” like functionality, allowing users to sync apps between devices for working on the go,” the site reports. “For example, when using the Maps app, you can look up directions on your PC before leaving the house, and then pull up the Maps app on your phone once out and about and resume exactly where you left off on your PC.” It is expected to work “exactly like Handoff does” — and to help users become more familiar with the feature and its existence, Microsoft is expected to make Cortana remind them about it. It’s unclear what the feature will be called in Windows yet, but it’s thought ...

Fairy circles discovered in Australia by researchers

Source: chattahbox.com --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) and Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig, Germany are unraveling the mystery behind what causes “fairy circles.” Recently discovered in the uninhabited Australian outback, fairy circles were thought to exist only in Africa. According to a new study in the PNAS journal ( Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences ), the research team found new evidence that these barren circular patches of land — previously thought to exist only in the dry Namibia grassland of southern Africa — occur due to the way plants organize themselves in response to water shortage. Up to now, scientists offered several theories to explain the honeycomb-like pattern formed by these circles, which have long been considered one of nature’s greatest mysteries. Some believed termites or ants nibble away at the roots of the grasses and kill them. Others suspected toxic carbon monoxide gas may rise from the earth under the circles and kill the vegetation. But the discoveries documented in the March, 2016 study corroborate a third, self-organization theory, which shows the amount of water available at the transition between desert and grassland is not enough for continuous vegetation cover. As a result, individual plants compete for precious water and organize themselves in this highly irregular characteristic grass carpet with large holes that provide water to the surrounding vege ...

Microsoft has made a custom version of Windows 10 for China

Source: www.techradar.com --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
As you're no doubt aware, Microsoft is pretty keen to push Windows 10 front and centre, and not just in the western world – in fact the company has produced a special edition of its newest operating system for China. As Ubergizmo reports, Windows 10 Zhuangongban translates as a 'Windows 10 Specially-Provided Edition', and Microsoft is delivering this in order to tap into the vast Chinese market. Unsurprisingly, Microsoft's chief executive in China, Ralph Haupter, explained to a Chinese magazine that many of the changes for this version revolve around beefing up security and providing more management features as requested by the Chinese government. This version of the OS also cuts out many Microsoft apps and services, which again is no great surprise. The exact differences and extent of the changes weren't made clear, although by the sound of things we're guessing they're pretty significant. Jumping hurdles Microsoft will almost certainly want to clear any hurdles the Chinese regime puts in its way, following the fracas you may recall two years ago when China banned Windows 8 across government offices with security and safety concerns being cited as a reason in some quarters. Redmond certainly wouldn't want Windows 10 to suffer the same fate, and miss out on a considerable revenue stream. According to the latest figures drawn from US government websites, in terms of its adoption rate over in the States, Windows 10 has now crested ...

AMD set to kill off 32-bit Radeon drivers

Source: www.fudzilla.com --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
Who needs it? AMD looks close to killing off support for 32-bit Windows for its Radeon drivers. Techpowerup  found a hint when it visited AMD's Drivers + Download Center on the company website, and tried clicking on the "32-bit" links of some of its Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 drivers, which redirected to an ominously-worded AMD knowledge-base article (Article #GPU-622). This knowledge-base article, intended for people looking for 32-bit drivers, reads: “A system running Microsoft Windows 10 64 Bit can take full advantage of the advanced visual and performance features of these graphics cards. However, AMD also provides 64 Bit drivers for Microsoft Windows 8.1 and Microsoft Windows 7 to accommodate those users who choose to use an older Microsoft Operating System.” But the knowledge-base article has no links for the drivers users are looking for. It looks like 32-bit versions of Radeon Software 16.3.2 are still there but you have to practically crack the webpage to find it. According to the download page, AMD's recently launched Radeon Pro Duo already completely lacks 32-bit Windows support, and the company is only providing 64-bit drivers. The move makes common sense. Most of AMD’s Radeon R9 and Fury series GPUs feature 4 GB or more of video memory, and 64-bit Windows users making up the most of the rest. Hard to find anyone who will run 32-bit Windows for games. ...

US hacks iPhone, ends legal battle but questions linger

Source: baynews9.com --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
The extraordinary legal fight pitting the Obama administration against technology giant Apple Inc. ended unexpectedly after the FBI said it used a mysterious method without Apple's help to hack into a California mass shooter's iPhone. Left unanswered, however, were questions about how the sudden development would affect privacy in the future, and what happens the next time the government is frustrated by digital security lockout features. Government prosecutors asked a federal judge on Monday to vacate a disputed order forcing Apple to help the FBI break into the iPhone, saying it was no longer necessary. The FBI used the unspecified technique to access data on an iPhone used by gunman Syed Farook, who died with his wife in a gun battle with police after they killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California, in December. The Justice Department said agents are now reviewing the information on the phone. But the government's brief court filing, in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, provided no details about how the FBI got into the phone. Nor did it identify the non-government "outside party" that showed agents how to get past the phone's security defenses. Authorities had previously said only Apple had the ability to help them unlock the phone. Apple responded by saying it will continue to increase the security of its products. "We will continue to help law enforcement with their investigations, as we have d ...

This Is Apple’s Response to the FBI Hacking Into That iPhone

Source: fortune.com --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
On Monday, the FBI essentially told Apple “oh never mind, we figured out a way into that iPhone ourselves.” So the government is dropping its federal court case against the tech giant. With the help of a third party, the federal agency said it was able to successfully crack into encrypted information stored on the smartphone used by Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the shooters in the San Bernardino, Calif., attack last December. For weeks, the government pressed for Apple’s help, arguing that the only way into the phone was for Apple to build a special kind of software for the feds, what Apple started calling a “GovtOS.” Apple decried the request, arguing it would hurt the security of all its phones. While it’s not immediately clear whether or not the technique FBI used on Farook’s iPhone 5c could be used to sneak into other models, the FBI’s successful hack raises new questions about the effectiveness of Apple’s device encryption. Here’s what Apple said Monday after the FBI dropped its case: From the beginning, we objected to the FBI's demand that Apple build a backdoor into the iPhone because we believed it was wrong and would set a dangerous precedent. As a result of the government's dismissal, neither of these occurred. This case should never have been brought. We will continue to help law enforcement with their investigations, as we have done all along, and we will continue to increase the security of our products as the threats ...

Death by 1,000 Screens

Source: fortune.com --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
?A Boom with a View? is a column about startups and the technology industry, written by Erin Griffith. Find them all here: fortune.com/boom . More info, fewer screens: For the last year, the Apple Watch was the barometer from which we measure the success of the much-hyped wearable tech category. Even though Apple's first wearable device is, by most measures, the " king of smartwatch sales ," many view it as a disappointment because it failed to live up to the hype. The smartwatch is not (yet) the next smartphone, therefore, it is a complete failure. Last week Apple aapl lowered the price of the cheapest Apple Watch by $50. That pall of failure cast a shadow on the entire wearable tech category. Fitbit fit stock is down by more than 50% this year. Last week Pebble Watch, the Kickstarter-fueled first-mover in smartwatches, laid off 25% of its staff, casting more doubts about the size of the market. Cuff, a smart bracelet startup that raised $5 million last year, quietly shut down. Why aren't we all wearing computers on our wrists? One hypothesis is the screen problem. We already have enough screens bombarding us with notifications that it's become a source of stress. So we're less inclined to attach one to our bodies. (How long does it take you to catch up on all the pings from Slack, Twitter, gChat, multiple inboxes, and text messages after a simple-one-hour meeting? Do you really want those alerts distracting you during the meeti ...

Lessons the FBI should learn from the San Bernardino iPhone debacle

Source: bgr.com --- Tuesday, March 29, 2016
The FBI has for the time being given up on its quest to force Apple to write a separate "GovtOS" to help law enforcement officials bypass the iPhone's security protocols. Although the agency succeeded in finding a way to hack into the iPhone 5c used by San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook, it will not get to set a precedent where it can order tech companies to write software that will break their own products' security. As Apple explained this week , this is a case that the FBI and Department of Justice should have never pursued and I'd like to think that the government has learned some important lessons from this fiasco... though I'm not holding my breath. Lisa Dougan: 'My Job is to Represent a Community of Solidarity Activists Fighting for Those Affected By the LRA'

Source: http://ift.tt/zP5LE8 - Tuesday, March 29, 2016
If Lisa Dougan's shoes were to tell a story they would begin on the marble hallways of the Capitol building in Washington and end on the clay streets of central Africa. Both of which would, undoubtedly, be described with the same level of enthusiasm. "I constantly reconnect to the humanity of my work" says Dougan, CEO of Invisible Children, an organisation set up to help combat the kidnapping of children in central Africa. Her frustration with bureaucracy is apparent, but diluted by traditional experiences she has lobbying with politicians. We are both sitting in our respective work spaces, comfortable, and talking on the phone. As we speak, hundreds of children are getting ready for bed with the fear of abduction in South Sudan, the Central African Republic (CAR), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo - a fear that originated 27 years ago with Joseph Kony, the self appointed messiah of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) dedicated to terrorising the region. "Everyday I feel the urgency of the situation in central Africa, but I have to hold that in tension due to the slow moving process of political advocacy" says Dougan. As CEO of Invisible Children, Dougan spends around four months in central Africa with the majority of her time consumed by acquiring donations and lobbying in Washington. After over ten years of creative documentaries, explanatory meetings with law makers, and loud protests Dougan and her team are confident that

Almost nobody thought Syracuse was going to be in the Final Four

Source: theweek.com --- Monday, March 28, 2016
If you have 10-seed Syracuse in your bracket's Final Four, you are probably feel pretty smug: Only 0.4 percent of NCAA men's Basketball tournament brackets listed the Orange progressing to the Final Four, SB Nation reports . And for a smart reason reason, too: Syracuse's defeat of top-seeded Virginia on Sunday was historic. No 10th-seeded team has ever made the Final Four. The number of people who predicted this insane Final Four matchup — Villanova vs. Oklahoma, and Syracuse vs. North Carolina — is expectedly small, too. Of the 13 million people to have filed brackets with ESPN, only 1,140 predicted the Final Four to look the way it does right now. Even more incredibly, Cinderella-story Syracuse almost didn't even make the bracket in the first place: Syracuse wasn't supposed to make the dang NCAA Tournament. The Orange had a legitimately lackluster season. They went 9-9 in the ACC. They lost a game to garbage St. John's. St. John's! After beating Syracuse, St. John's went on to lose 21 of their final 22 games. Syracuse had an RPI ranking of 68, lower than any team ever selected to make the NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid. They had more losses to teams that missed the NCAA Tournament (five) than they had wins against teams that made it (three). Of 144 bracketologists represented in the Bracket Matrix, less than half considered the Orange a tourney team. [ SB Nation ] Syracuse will meet top seed North Carolina Saturday evenin ...

Notebook makers look to servers to make up for lost cash

Source: www.fudzilla.com --- Monday, March 28, 2016
Non-notebook lines way forward ODMs are giving up on PCs in favour of non-notebook production lines and servers. According to Digitimes Microsoft's free upgrade to Windows 10 has had almost no effect in triggering a replacement trend, Intel's new Skylake processors are not driving much demand among consumers. Also 2-in-1 devices, which were originally expected to enjoy strong growth in 2016, may also not perform as expected. ODMs are now looking at non-notebook product lines especially servers to maintain their gross margin performances in 2016. Intel has been promoting its Rack Scale Architecture (RSA), which will modularise components such as storage, CPU, memory and networking and allow customers to build servers based on their workload demand. The theory is that with the RSA architecture, competition in the server industry will grow fiercer and most brand vendors have been looking to form partnerships with suppliers to strengthen their software/hardware integration.Intel's upcoming new Purley platform and datacentre server products are expected to see strong shipments in 2016. Inventec is one which has shifting its R&D focus to server related products, and its non-notebook product lines' combined revenue contribution reached about half in the fourth quarter of 2015, with servers accounting for 35 per cent. ...

South Carolina football recruiting: Stephen Guidry should make an impact in 2017

Source: http://ift.tt/11uvG46 --- Monday, March 28, 2016
It's only March, but the Gamecocks received a hard commit from 6'4 wide receiver Stephen Guidry. What could he bring to the Gamecocks in 2017? With the 2016/17 recruiting season not even out of the gate, the South Carolina Gamecocks have received a few hard commitments from prospects, one of them from community college receiver Stephen Guidry. Guidry, out of Morganza, Louisana, spent a season at Hinds (Miss.) Community College before he started receiving serious college attention from larger programs. Guidry received offers from Miami (Fla.), Louisiana-Monroe, Georgia, Missouri and Mississippi State. Examining the tape, we see Guidry is a larger receiver who uses his size to impose his will upon opposing cornerbacks. He shows a good ability to leap, skying over defenders to grab 50/50 balls while featuring exceptional speed in the open field. His size also make him tough to bring down. Guidry is good at making difficult catches and catching balls in traffic, an important skill that most receivers in the SEC need to possess. He also adds another outside receiver to the Gamecocks roster that could be a potential target for Jake Bentley or Brandon Mcllwain in the future. Being a larger receiver, Guidry could work predominately on the outside, using his skills and size to grab jump balls and make plays near the sidelines. Given his time in JUCO, Guidry could arrive on campus a more polished product than some players coming in straigh ...
