It’s an argument that’s been made by athletes about sports writers and commentators before: if you’ve never played the game you aren’t allowed to have an opinion about it. But that’s complete bullshit. We don’t say, “Scientists have never been one-celled organisms so how can they know how eukaryotes work?” because, obviously, knowledge isn’t exclusive to those who’ve experienced it first-hand. If it were, college would be insane. “Ugh, I gotta study for my Medieval History test tomorrow by impaling some non-believers.” Comedian Steve Hofstetter had to explain this concept to a heckler who just couldn’t let him continue cracking jokes about parents who think they’re special for raising a child (because he doesn’t have a child).
