Dodgers back to playing their best baseball

LOS ANGELES — Remember when the Dodgers were on pace to win 116 games? That team is back. With each game the last three weeks, their streak of 16 losses in 17 games that leaked into early September looks like a blip, not an indicator. Arizona gained some Cinderella cred entering the NLDS by winning 11 of the 19 games in the season series with the Dodgers, but that has not translated as the Diamondbacks have fallen into an 0-2 hole after an 8-5 loss in Game 2 Saturday. If it were ever hard to remember the Dodgers led the majors with 104 victories, it isn’t anymore. The Dodgers led the majors in ERA and set a franchise record for homers, but they did not use either in the Game 2 matchup against season-long nemesis Robbie Ray, who had turned Dodger Stadium into a personal party bus by giving up two earned runs while striking out 37 in 19.2 innings. They found another way, as they had during a streak in which they won 51 of 60 starting June 6. The Dodgers could tell early that Ray was not himself, so they waited him out, patiently working at-bat after at-bat, even if the results were not immediately evident. They scored their first run on two walks and a wild pitch in the second inning to cut the deficit to 2-1 before breking through with two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth with a smaller-ball approach.
