“It’s starting to look like a Baseball field again” New Playing Surface Project Continues It will be a little while still before the playing surface at Safeco Field looks like it’s ready for James Paxton to take the hill or for Mitch Haniger to roam the outfield. But it’s getting closer. Earlier this week, the Mariners grounds crew took a big step forward in the process of replacing the entire playing surface. They installed home plate and the anchors for each of the bases and began building back up the pitcher’s mound and framing in the base lines. New root zone mix for the infield turf is being applied, and the infield dirt has arrived. “It’s starting to look like a Baseball field again,” Mariners head groundskeeper Bob Chirstofferson said. “The process to get there is a lot, but it’s all coming along good.” Dialing in Home Plate After removing all of the turf and excavating most of the infield dirt earlier this month, the infield is beginning to take shape once again. Three inches of previously existing infield soil and three inches of new dirt have been mixed to form the new root zone for the infield sod. The new infield dirt is also being put on in layers across the diamond.
