Apple TV has been one of my favorite Apple products since it went on sale in 2007. It was actually announced in 2006, meaning it’s actually older than the iPhone! I’ve owned every generation of Apple TV, starting with that first one which was nearly as big as a Mac mini was was little more than an iPod dedicated to TV playback. It was good for listening to purchased iTunes music and watching purchased iTunes movies and TV and that was about it. It eventually got something approximating apps, but they were pushed out at Apple’s discretion, whether you wanted them or not. Two years ago, with the fourth generation Apple TV, we finally got the radical update Apple TV fans had been waiting years for: an operating system that was a variant of iOS, a real App Store giving Apple TV owners control of what content they had on their Apple TV, Siri voice control, a redesigned remote control, and games. This September, Apple announced the successor to that product: Apple TV 4K. Let’s dive into what’s new: 4K HDR In one sense, Apple probably should have equipped the last generation with 4K support. 4K TVs were just starting to become more common in 2015, and the bleeding edge home theater customers were certainly eager for it.
