Will the baseball gods allow it to happen?

Oh, Lord, please help me. I am not a very religious person, but am very spiritual. I respect others and others’ things. I don’t cheat or steal. I’ve never been to jail. I’m just here. But now I need inspiration from somewhere beyond the cozy confines of this earth. Because, at the time of this writing, the Chicago Cubs will be playing the New York Yankees in the World Series. Sweet fancy Moses. Our house consists of me — a Yankees fan since birth — and Michelle, known to readers here as Cubbie for her love of the North Siders. If this happens — and it is still a big if — I am doomed. I grew up less than an hour from Yankee Stadium. Back then, it seemed like an eternity to get to the big ballyard in the Bronx, but it turned out it was just childhood impatience. Our family went to two or three games per year. Back then, it was still possible for a family of six to go to a ballgame without having to take out a second mortgage on the house. Unfortunately, the Yankees stunk. I mean stunk! The positive was that tickets were readily available, but the team was atrocious most years. Owner George Steinbrenner, who is held up in the pantheon of Baseball royalty now, was hated by Yankees’ fans back then. He would trade the entire farm system for an aging relief pitcher. He fired managers on a whim. I remember Dad telling me a story of one Yankee employee in the public relations office who was to have said, “I get fired about six times a we ...
