Report: Tigers' Miguel Cabrera pulled from home run derby in Dominican Republic

Detroit's starting first baseman was tapped to participate in the inaugural event Wednesday in the Dominican Republic alongside three other Major League Baseball players. Spring training is right around the corner, but Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera hoped to get in a few extra swings beforehand. That was until the Major League Baseball Players Association stepped in Monday and nixed Cabrera, David Ortiz and Robinson Cano from participating in a planned home run derby this week in the Dominican Republic, ESPN reports . The home run derby was scheduled for Wednesday as part of the Caribbean Series, one organizers hoped to help spur interest for the week-long event. But according to ESPN , the MLBPA feared injury and asked event organizers to provide a financial guarantee for the three to participate. "As a result, in order to protect the rights and interests of the players invited to compete, we were forced to advise those players and their representatives that participating in the event was not in their best interests," Tony Clark, the MLBPA's executive director, said in a statement. MLBPA did not immediately return a message seeking comment from MLive. The derby will continue on Wednesday, ESPN reports, with different participants including nine-time All-Star and former MLB Home Run Derby champion Vladimir Guerrero and Minnesota Twins designated hitter Kenny Vargas.
