Interactive Entertainment Release Date: October 10, 2017 ESRB: M For the sequel to the surprise hit Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor , American developer Monolith Productions decided to double down on everything that worked in the original without really addressing any of its lingering problems. And they decided to add at least one new hitch while they were at it. In case you skipped the 2014 action role-playing game based on the extended universe of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy epic, it’s set sometime during the gap between events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings . It focuses on a ranger named Talion who is raised from the dead and fused to the spirit of an elf lord named Celebrimbor. The pair use their combined might to hack and slash a path through the orc armies of Mordor. The follow-up, Middle-earth: Shadow of War , takes place not long after the events of the first game, with Talion and Celebrimbor still bonded and working to protect the free races of Middle earth from the forces of Sauron and the Witch-king. The story, though filled with some interesting and very Tolkienian characters – from the recognizable Shelob and Gollum to newcomers like Idril, shieldmaiden of Minas Ithil, and Baranor, a brave army lieutenant – won’t prove particularly revelatory to fans of the fiction, but the cut scen ...
