LAWRENCE — Free State will get a chance to defend its crown. The No. 4 seed Firebirds beat top-seeded Blue Valley 2-0 on Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark in the semifinals of the Class 6A state tournament. The Firebirds will play the Washburn Rural-Shawnee Mission East winner at approximately 2 p.m. Clinging to a one-run lead in the sixth, the Tigers (21-3) opened the inning with three consecutive hits against Hunter Gudde, who came on in relief of Trevor Munsch.
