Next week at the Big 12 meetings in the Dallas area, the conference's Faculty Athletics Representatives are set to vote on a proposed rule change that would give the Oklahoma quarterback back the year of eligibility he lost after transferring from Texas Tech after the 2013 season. Big 12 rules stipulate that a player must not only sit out a year, but also lose a season of eligibility when transferring to another school in the conference. The rule applies to Mayfield even though he was a walk-on at Texas Tech and had not been added on scholarship and walked on at Oklahoma initially before receiving a scholarship not long after the transfer. The proposed rule change, which needs to pass by a simple majority of the 10 FAR members, would remove the requirement to lose a year of eligibility for non-recruited walk-ons. “We believe this is a student-athlete welfare matter,” Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione said.
