SAUGERTIES – The Marlboro High School Baseball team started strong and finished strong, winning the Section 9 Class B title with an 11-2 win over Rhinebeck at sweltering Cantine Field on Saturday. Members of the Marlboro Baseball team celebrate their Section 9 Class B title win, 11-2 over Rhinebeck, on Saturday in Saugerties. The championship is Marlboro’s first since 2010. Marlboro busted the game open in the bottom of the first inning. After Rhinebeck opened the scoring on Spencer Hutchins’ RBI single in the first inning that scored Ryan Euell, the Iron Dukes exploded as Xavier Oliver’s 1-out RBI single scored John Mooradian to tie the game at 1-1. Then the Iron Dukes exploded. Marlboro batted around in the inning with five runs and five hits. Nick Mongelli’s RBI single to left scored Oliver to give Marlboro a 2-1 lead. Jack Rusk’s bases-loaded, two-run single scored Cole Nicolis and Mongelli to put Marlboro up 4-1. Tristan Ceriello’s sacrifice fly scored Austin Casey to put Marlboro up 5-1. Marlboro tacked on two more runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Sam Mongelli and a sacrifice fly by Nicolis. Rhinebeck plated its second run in the fifth as Spencer Hutchins was robbed of a hit by a leaping, diving catch by Sam Mongelli, but Ryan Euell scored from third on the sacrifice fly. Mooradian scored on an error after picking up his fourth single of the day. Mongelli also scored on the throw that handcuffed Rhinebeck’s first base ...
