Proud ‘alpha nerds’ restore ‘antiques’

Photo by MORGAN CAMPBELL, STAR NEWS GROUP WALL TOWNSHIP — Computers that might otherwise be written off as obsolete, are seen by the MidAtlantic Retro Computing Hobbyists as “antique,” “vintage” and even “historic.” “We are the alpha nerds of Monmouth County,” said president and co-founder Evan Koblentz. The group, also known by the acronym MARCH, held a two-day repair workshop here last weekend. Members of the 501[c]3 nonprofit organization gathered at the InfoAge Science Center at Camp Evans, in Wall, last weekend to share their knowledge, collaborate and celebrate their appreciation for vintage computers. Mr. Koblentz said the organization hosts three to four such workshops a year. Members and non-members are invited and the turnouts are small but dedicated, he said. “Our major event is called the Vintage Computer Festival East,” he said, “where hundreds of people from all over, from every continent, come and attend this annual, three-day event.” He added: “It's like a car show, with the difference that at a car show you can't drive the cars. At our show, you can.” MARCH and its members collect, fix up and show off their antique computers. Mr. Koblentz said their idea of "antique' in the computer field is 1950s to the 1980s.
