Eight not-fake lessons from Friday’s opener

The Chicago Cubs opened their Cactus League schedule against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday in Maryvale, Arizona. Frankly, it was wonderful to get to kick back and just enjoy some Baseball. And while the score matters about as much as it did on Whose Line is it Anyway (the Cubs did lose 2-1 though), it’s important that we acknowledge the time-honored sporting tradition known as the knee-jerk reaction. I watched the entire game, and I’ll tell you something: I’ve seen the future. If this game is any indication – and it probably is, since the saying goes, “ You practice how you play ” – this season is going to look a lot different for Cubs fans. So please enjoy these eight totally real, extremely serious things I decided from the spring training opener. 1. A shocking new favorite for Opening Day starter If the opener Friday is any indication, the Cubs have way more depth in the starting rotation than previously believed. Well-travelled left-hander Michael Roth, who was on virtually no one’s radar, emerged as the dark horse favorite to pitch Opening Day after pitching two scoreless innings. How about that scouting? Among his highlights: striking out Christian Yelich in the first inning. There were unsubstantiated reports of Brewers fans burning Yelich jerseys after his disastrous start to the spring.
