Zell Miller wanted to be a minor league shortstop, but his Baseball dreams turned into the governorship of Georgia and a Senator from Georgia. He was also a Marine, a college professor and even wrote some songs. He was the only politician I can think of who was a keynote speaker at both the Democratic and the Republican National Conventions. Miller was about the last of the old-fashioned Democrats, who by the radicalized standards of today’s Democratic party would be quite conservative, but he was above all a man who not only actually had principles, but didn’t waver from them. And he was a civil man who nonetheless didn’t suffer from an excess of political correctness. Having been in failing health in recent years, Miller had been out of the spotlight, and I have missed his pungent, reality-based commentary. He will be sorely missed. ...
