Often the women leaders that I coach have a hard time tooting their own horn. They feel the results should speak for themselves. Except, that they don't. In the competitive corporate culture where bonuses, promotions, stock options, and sometimes our jobs are at stake, women leaders are coached to boldly share their results. Yet, for many women and those they work with, there are double standards. Women tooting their horn can appear boastful and self-promoting. So what is the solution? Enter former US President Jimmy Carter. In my opinion he is one who toots his horn with great humility. I am part of the Carter Center Board of Counselors. We meet once a quarter and President Carter shares along with others at the Carter Center all the great progress in "Waging Peace, Fighting Disease". During a recent meeting after two of the young Carter Center interns had made great presentations, President Carter got up and said with a smile “One of the times I feel the most inferior is when I have to present after the interns”. It got a great laugh from the audience. The statement was full of humor, humility and humanity, qualities that President Carter embodies.
