O’Brien: Young’s Ke’Vaughn Chappell grinds up yards, shares the glory in win over Steinmetz

Touchdowns matter. Especially when you are a high school Football player trying to get noticed on a team that gets almost no attention from the media or recruiting analysts. Young running back Ke’Vaughn Chappell was an unstoppable force Thursday at Rockne Stadium. The senior ran for 223 yards on 24 carries. He propelled Young downfield on every touchdown drive, but quarterback Jordan Hall played the vulture roll, running in three touchdowns from short yardage in the Dolphins’ 28-0 win over Steinmetz. Chappell didn’t mind giving up the end zone glory one bit. “I like eating,” Chappell said. “But when the team eats it is so much better. (Young coach Tim Franken) always says he would rather eat with a whole team of people at Chick-fil-A then go out to somewhere all bougie and stuff by himself.” Chappell is fast, but that isn’t what makes him special. It’s his bruising style. His legs keep moving and the first tackler or two rarely has a chance to bring him down. “It’s all mental,” Chappell said. “Every day in practice coach throws the big bags at us while we run the ball. It teaches us to keep our balance and stay on our feet. He always tells us that.” Young (4-0, 2-0 Public League Big Shoulders) ran the ball 38 times and passed just twice. “That’s pretty much how it has been for us this season,” Franken said. We have three good backs with Ke’Vaughn, Miles (Baggett) and Kendred (Belk). So we’re going to run ‘em.” Belk had four rushe ...
