BOULDER — With a return trip to the NCAA Tournament last season, the fourth appearance in Tad Boyle’s sixth season as head coach, the Colorado men’s Basketball team enters this season with high expectations. Advancing to the second weekend of the tournament is the logical next step for a team that has consistently hovered in the top half of one of the country’s top conferences. But Boyle, speaking at CU’s local media day Tuesday, had a clear message as it relates to that goal. His team isn’t close to that level — at least not yet. “Right now, if I had to describe our team in one word, it would be ‘overrated,’ ” Boyle said. “We’re not consistent enough to be considered an upper-tier Pac-12 team right now. That’s today. We’re a work in progress. Thank God the season does not start right now.” The season begins with a nonconference home game against Sacramento State on Nov. 11. The Buffs, who went 22-12 last season and finished fifth in the Pac-12, are once again picked to finish fifth. And given CU’s talented returning class — including George King, who was named the Pac-12’s most improved player last season — and the addition of Derrick White, a Division II All-American who could be an all-league caliber player, there’s reason to believe the Buffs could climb higher than where they are pegged.
