The Great Eastern Community Shield, doubling as the S.League opener, was held at the National Stadium on 26 February 2017. Before the match, a “Football Fan Zone” event was held. All S.League teams (except DPMM Brunei) had set up booths, which included games and selling of 2017 club merchandise. A mini-Football tournament for children also took place, with a few S.League teams such as Tampines Rovers, Home United, Balestier Khalsa putting-in teams. Mascots for all team made an appearance to take photos with fans. With the event wrapped up, it was time for the Community Shield.
